The August 21 Freedom Thursday broadcast on The Ride With ChuckDiesal was a spiritual and soulful journey that traveled across eras, genres, and moods, we started with heartfelt praise and closing with house classics that define the dance floor.
The show opened with the raw soul of D’Angelo’s “Send It On”, setting a heartfelt tone before moving straight into the uplifting sounds of gospel and praise. Tamela Mann’s “Take Me to the King” (with Kirk Franklin), Donnie McClurkin’s “We Fall Down”, and Kirk Franklin & The Clark Sisters’ “Brighter Day” brought church energy alive, while Mary Mary added fire with God in Me.
From there, the focus shifted into classic and timeless soul moments. Aretha Franklin reminded us why she’s the Queen of Soul with Natural Woman, paired beautifully with Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye’s “You Are Everything.” The R&B vibes continued with Mint Condition’s “So Fine”, Troop’s “Spread My Wings”, Stokley’s “SHE”, Eric Roberson & Marsha Ambrosius’ “She Ought to Know”, Bobby Brown’s “Rock Wit’cha”, and Trina Broussard’s “Inside My Love.” A trip through different eras, but all connected through deep soul energy.
The second half of the show took things to the dance floor with soulful house and underground classics. Starting with Terry Hunter & Jay Adams – We Are One, the energy lifted into house unity. From there we spun through Lois Plugged & Fruckie, Barbara Tucker (Obskür Remix), Maurice Joshua, Cajmere’s “Brighter Days,” Elements of Life, Louie Vega, Nuyorican Soul, and Monique Bingham & Black Coffee. Each track layered rhythm, vocals, and groove that carried the soulful message into a new dimension.
We closed the night perfectly with two anthems of unity and timelessness: Stevie Wonder’s “As” from Songs in the Key of Life and Marshall Jefferson’s “Move Your Body”, the record that defined house music’s foundation. Together they tied the show’s theme of spirit, love, and freedom back to its core.
