On this week’s Freedom Thursday we went full Hip Hop mode. Meaning MCs and flow from start to finish. I opened the first hour with pure Chicago flavor, Common’s “A Penny for My Thoughts”, setting the stage with introspection and bars that always cut deep. From there we expanded the spectrum with Joey Bada$$, Skyzoo, and Royce Da 5’9’s “Boblo Boat” featuring J. Cole, weaving in storytelling and raw emotion. Brad Jordan aka Scarface made his mark with “Heaven”, showing why he’s a pillar of Southern Hip Hop. Prince Paul’s Prince Among Thieves is arguably the greatest Hip Hop opera ever written, that brought theatrical brilliance into the set, followed by gems from Juggaknots, Large Professor with Q-Tip, and a vintage MF DOOM cut that reminded us why he’s a legend.
The second hour, I flipped it. We started on the West Side of Chicago with Triple Darkness’ anthem “Too Krazy”, a contrast to Common’s South Side storytelling that kicked off the show. From there the energy rose heavy with Busta Rhymes, M.O.P., Lupe Fiasco, and Kendrick Lamar teaming with Baby Keem on “family ties”. Jadakiss, Benny the Butcher, and Ghostface linked with Statik Selektah on “Unpredictable”, proving the new era still thrives on pure lyricism.
I slipped in Doodlebug and Michole White for cosmic vibes, Freddie Old Soul and Bucky Luger for underground depth, and closed the night strong with Nas’ “Rule” featuring Amerie—a reminder of Hip Hop’s power to blend soul, truth, and rhythm.
This was Hip Hop in its truest form, bars, beats, and balance between the golden era and the new wave. When I say the energy stayed constant throughout the show, I mean it!!!! Chicago to the coasts, legends to newcomers, all tied together by flow.
