This week’s Freedom Thursday was a celebration of jazz in all its forms, showing how deeply the genre shapes music across time and sound. The sun was blazing in Prague, and I wanted a soundtrack to match the energy of the day. One that would bless the ears and carry the spirit of freedom through music.

The first hour leaned into jazz classics and fusion: Jorge Ben’s “Cavaleiro do Cavalo Imaculado,” Tom Browne’s iconic “Funkin’ for Jamaica,” Herb Alpert, The Crusaders’ legendary “Street Life,” Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage,” and Jackie McLean’s “Yams.” Each record set the tone for a timeless journey.

In the second hour, I spotlighted how jazz directly fuels hip hop and modern soul. Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfá’s “Saudade Vem Correndo”, the original sample for The Pharcyde’s “Runnin’” became the perfect bridge into Guru’s Jazzmatazz, The Internet, Amel Larrieux, and Moonchild. From there, the show opened up into rich textures with Yussef Dayes, Adrian Younge, and Madlib’s Shades of Blue.

Closing the set, the spirit of jazz carried into dance, house, and future soul with Roy Davis Jr., Black Coffee, Maverick Soul, and Robert Glasper’s “Over” featuring Yebba. From start to finish, Freedom Thursday reflected the truth that jazz is not just history, it is the pulse of today’s music, & forever inspiring and reshaping sound.
