On The Ride With ChuckDiesal, I had a call with Ollie Teeba, one of the two founding members of the legendary British jazz-funk/hip-hop group The Herbaliser. Formed in the early 1990s with Jake Wherry, the group carved a unique sound that fused hip hop, funk, jazz, and cinematic beats.

After Jake Wherry stepped away in 2021, Teeba carried the torch, and in 2024 reassembled the original live band members to bring The Herbaliser’s classic sound back to the stage.

In our conversation, Ollie shared:

  • The story of how The Herbaliser was created in the UK during the rise of hip hop’s golden era.
  • How their sound blended funk and jazz with sample-based hip hop to carve a unique lane.
  • Thoughts on how music and hip hop culture have evolved over the decades.
  • Why live instrumentation still matters in an era of digital production.
  • What fans can expect from their upcoming show at Lucerna Music Bar in Prague on September 25th 2025.

This is a must-listen for fans of classic UK hip hop, jazz-funk, and live band energy.

This week’s New Music Tuesday was a true ride through sound.

The first hour was all about energy and variety. We moved from KeiyaA’s soulful “take it” into RAYE’s dramatic “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!”, and then into alt-rap textures with JD Cliffe’s “I JUST FEEL ALIVE”. Tracks like Bakar’s “Lonyo!”Madison Ryann Ward’s “DON’T STRESS”, and Isaiah Falls & SiR’s “BROWN SUGAH”layered R&B and uplifting vibes that flowed seamlessly into afrobeats and reggae. From Qing Madi’s “Scumbag” and Rukmani & SGaWD’s “Not Nice” to Valiant’s “Bare Minimum”, the hour built a wave of global sounds that meshed genres while keeping the pulse strong.

The second hour shifted tone. The Minister opened with reflections on Jay Electronica’s new track with Quentin Miller, laying a thoughtful foundation. After the Marco Polo & Rakim collaboration, we transitioned into my interview with Ollie Teeba of The Herbaliser, diving into their history, their jazz-funk and hip hop legacy, and their upcoming live show in Prague.

We closed out the show with more heavy hitters of hip hop, with Vic SpencerDave EastTermanologyErick Sermon with Method Man & Redman, plus deep grooves from CARRTOONS with Erick the Architect & Phonte. Each track capped off the mix with fire, carrying the night’s energy all the way through.

This episode was about connection: the sound of today’s new music alongside a conversation with an artist whose work helped shape the blueprint.
