Freedom Thursday | The Ride With ChuckDiesal

This week’s Freedom Thursday was all about balance & soulful energy to open, then a shift into electronic grooves before taking it all the way Hip Hop.

In the 1st hour we started smooth and timeless with The Jones Girls’ Nights Over Egypt, setting a soulful foundation. The journey continued through the heartfelt harmonies of The Ethics, the modern soul textures of Malia, and the uplifting energy of Alysza Feliciano. From there, I brought in Soul II Soul’s Keep On Movin’ and the heartfelt tones of Emily King, Lovher, Xscape, and Fantasia. The first hour closed with a touch of electronic flavor from Little Dragon, PinkPantheress, Sandy Rivera & Mike Dunn, Maurice Joshua, and Kilo Kish, giving the set a forward-looking pulse while keeping that soulful core alive.

In the 2nd hour it was strictly Hip Hop. I came in strong with Boogie Down Productions’ Jack of Spades and kept the energy raw with Inspectah Deck, Pac Div, Sampa the Great with Estelle, The Herbaliser alongside MF Doom, and Joell Ortiz. The momentum kept building with DJ Hoppa, Logic & Marlon Craft, Cordae, Erick Sermon, and the ever-powerful voice of Erykah Badu on Danger. Common and Slum Village added that Dwele connection, while Blackalicious and The Foreign Exchange kept it deeply rooted in Hip Hop soul. To close, I doubled up on one of my all-time favorite MCs, Phonte, first solo then with Eric Roberson, it was a proper way to seal the night.
