Freedom Thursday: Hip Hop Authority to Soulful Closure

This episode of The Ride With ChuckDiesal delivered two very distinct musical movements.

The show opened strong with Hip Hop records built to make true fans stand up. The first hour leaned deep into underground and lyrical Hip Hop culture, starting with DJ.Fresh before moving through heavyweights and respected voices across multiple generations of the genre.

King Geedorah brought the MF DOOM legacy into the mix, followed by the smooth but sharp delivery of Q Tip on “Gettin’ Up.” Tall Black Guy and Ozay Moore kept the groove soulful while Large Professor assembled a powerhouse lineup featuring Cormega, Action Bronson, Roc Marciano, and Saigon.

From there the energy stayed rooted in classic Hip Hop craftsmanship. Black Moon, Pete Rock and Smif N Wessun, Noreaga, Heno., Precyce Politix, Mac Miller, Talib Kweli, and Wynne all carried the lyrical momentum forward.

The first hour was pure Hip Hop culture.

Then the show shifted directions.

The second hour opened with Delegation’s classic “Oh Honey,” signaling the transition into a more soulful and melodic atmosphere. From that moment the program leaned into funk, soul, and modern R&B textures.

Rae Khalil, Jhelisa, Sekou, and Kwncy continued the groove before a personal moment entered the set. Earlier that week I had the chance to see Thundercat live in Prague, and the ripple from that experience carried into the show. Naturally, that led to spinning “Dragonball Durag,” one of the standout records from his catalog.

From there Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals kept the modern soul momentum alive, while Tems added Afrobeat flavor and Robert Glasper delivered jazz infused depth.

The closing stretch slowed things down intentionally.

Two timeless R&B records brought the show home with warmth and nostalgia. Tony Toni Tone’s “Whatever You Want” and Babyface’s “This Is for the Lover in You” closed the ride with classic soul energy.

Hip Hop to open. Soul to close.
