LOVE, SOUL & POSITIVE VIBRATIONS, Y’ALL!
Nothing makes me happier than getting behind that microphone and sharing some GOOD MUSIC that makes people feel something! And this Monday on Africa Incorporated, that’s exactly what we did.
This was certainly a LOVE AFFAIR!
I’m talking about those beautiful harmonies, the songs that remind you of somebody special, the records that make you close your eyes and just enjoy the moment. Some old favorites, some newer sounds, and plenty of that Soul and R&B I’ve been enjoying for years.
And what better way to start than with one of my favorite singing couples out of PHILLY!
Kindred the Family Soul!
We opened with “I Am,” and if you know Kindred, you know what they bring to the table. Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler have always had that beautiful chemistry, bringing their relationship, family and everyday life into the music.
That’s SOUL MUSIC right there!
Then Eric Roberson and Avery*Sunshine came through with “Sweeter Than You.”
Now, come on! E and Avery on the same record? You already know we’re getting some beautiful vocals and plenty of feeling!
And that set kept getting better.
JANE HANDCOCK, featuring BJ the Chicago Kid, brought “You,” followed by Moonchild and Lalah Hathawaywith “Tell Him.”
I love that combination of Moonchild’s smooth musicianship and Lalah’s unmistakable voice. That’s the kind of record you can settle into and just let it take you somewhere.
Then Aya closed out our opening stretch with “Sean.”
By this point, we were deep into the SOUL, and the afternoon was feeling lovely!
NOW LET’S GET INTO THAT GROWN MAN FLOW!
Y’all remember BMU — Black Men United?
Man, when “U Will Know” came out, that was something special!
All those incredible Black male R&B voices coming together on one record, delivering a message about strength, encouragement and knowing your worth.
And for me, that’s part of what makes R&B so powerful. It isn’t always about romance. Sometimes it’s about brotherhood, family, encouragement and giving somebody the words they need to hear.
From there, we got into Boyz II Men with “Uhh Ahh.”
Those harmonies!
Then LSG, Levert, Sweat & Gill — came through with “All the Times,” featuring Faith Evans, Coko and Missy Elliott.
Now THAT’S a serious collection of R&B talent on one record!
We were definitely in that grown-folks section of the show, and I was enjoying every minute of it.
But before we moved on, Karyn White had something to say!
“SUPERWOMAN!”
What a record!
And what a reminder that even the strongest people need love, appreciation and somebody willing to understand what they’re carrying.
Karyn closed that set beautifully.
AND THEN THE LADIES TOOK OVER!
You can’t spend an afternoon celebrating R&B without bringing in some MARY J. BLIGE!
The Queen of Hip Hop Soul came through with “Everything,” and that’s one of those records that always puts me in a good mood.
Mary has that ability to make a song feel personal. You hear her voice, you feel the emotion, and before you know it, you’re singing right along!
Then JANET JACKSON stepped in with “Miss You Much.”
OH, WE KNOW THAT ONE!
That Rhythm Nation 1814 era was something else. The music, the dancing, the videos, the whole presentation! Janet and her team were delivering records that became part of our lives.
And yes, I still enjoy bringing that energy into my shows!
Then we went down to H-TOWN!
BEYONCÉ!
“End of Time” brought another kind of energy into the afternoon. Those drums, those horns, that rhythm! A record that knows how to get your attention and keep it.
And after all that?
JAHEIM reminded us that we’re FABULOUS!
I had to smile at that one. Some records just make you feel GOOD, and “Fabulous” is definitely one of them.
A LITTLE SOULFUL CHURCH FEELING TO SEND US HOME!
To close the afternoon, I brought in Yaahn Hunter Jr. & The Pocket Queen with “Righteous Vibe.”
And what a beautiful way to finish!
That soulful, Jazz-influenced, church-infused feeling was exactly what I wanted to leave y’all with.
A little groove, a little spirit, and plenty of positive energy!
Because that’s really what this entire afternoon was about.
LOVE.
Not just romantic love, either. Love for your people, love for yourself, love for the music, and appreciation for the artists who’ve given us so many beautiful memories.
I grew up with so much of this music around me, and I still get the same enjoyment sharing it today. Whether it’s a classic record that takes you back or a newer artist carrying that tradition forward, I want y’all to feel the connection.
And that’s one of the things I enjoy most about Africa Incorporated. We can travel across continents and musical cultures, but we can also spend an afternoon celebrating the incredible legacy of Black American Soul and R&B.
From Philly Soul to Chicago flavor, grown-man harmonies to the ladies who gave us CLASSICS, this Monday was all about LOVE and POSITIVE VIBRATIONS!
Another Africa Incorporated in the books!
GOOD MUSIC. GOOD PEOPLE. BEAUTIFUL CONNECTIONS.
And another lovely afternoon with DIESAL!
