Freedom Thursday kept the vibrations moving in every direction. We opened with Peabo Bryson, taking a moment to show love and respect following his recent passing. His music has been part of the soundtrack for generations, so it felt right to let his voice help start the ride before moving into soul and R&B through Jessica Sanchez, Elle Varner, Chrisette Michele and SAULT.
Afro house sounds from Palm Monkey, Russi, The Palm Tree Boy, South Dolphin and DJ Leao brought movement into the first hour, while davecreates, Claudia Isaki and WayV Walks helped connect the soulful side of the show with the rhythmic energy that followed. The first hour moved comfortably between soul, R&B and house without losing its direction.
As the show developed, hip hop started taking shape through Rest and DJ Wich, Joell Ortiz and Skillz alongside Common and Talib Kweli. With both Rest and KRS One performing in Prague over the upcoming weekend, it was only right to give listeners a taste of what was headed their way. Those records added another layer to the story while keeping the focus on the music.
The second hour leaned heavily into hip hop with Gang Starr, Pac Div, The Cool Kids, Danny Brown, Logic, Mac Miller, Tyler The Creator and Childish Gambino all contributing to a strong run of records. The energy stayed rooted in lyricism, production and timeless records that continue to resonate.
As the ride approached its close, the mood shifted back toward R&B and soul through Lee Rene’, Camper, Amerie and Joyce Wrice. We ended where we began, returning to Peabo Bryson as a final salute to an artist whose catalog continues to touch listeners around the world. The result was a Freedom Thursday that moved naturally through soul, Afro house, R&B and hip hop while carrying a thread of respect, celebration and good music from beginning to end.
