This edition of Africa Incorporated was built entirely on feeling. The playlist pulled from multiple eras and styles, but every record shared the same foundation: Soul. Whether it arrived through R&B harmonies, Blues storytelling, Jazz musicianship, Funk grooves, or House rhythms, the objective remained the same throughout the show—good music with lasting impact.

The session opened with Rude Boys and Michel’le, two artists whose records helped define a particular era of R&B. Their songs set a smooth and familiar tone before the ride moved into the neo-soul brilliance of Erykah Badu and the timeless musicianship of Tony! Toni! Toné!. These records continue to resonate because they are built on strong songwriting, groove, and authenticity.

From there, the foundation became even deeper. James Brown’s influence remains impossible to overstate, and “The Payback” served as a reminder of why so many genres continue to draw inspiration from his work. Bobby “Blue” Bland brought Blues into the conversation with one of the most recognizable songs of his career, while Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers delivered a record that perfectly captures the relationship between Jazz and Soul.

The middle of the session continued with Roy Ayers, Jimmy Castor, Gwen Guthrie, and Cameo. Together, these artists represent different branches of Black music’s family tree, from Jazz Fusion and Funk to Dance music and R&B. Each record carried its own identity while contributing to the larger atmosphere of the show.

Closing with Louie Vega’s remix of the 3 Winans Brothers felt like a natural progression rather than a departure. The House groove brought more energy to the dance floor while maintaining the soulful spirit that had guided the entire session. It was a reminder that House music, at its core, remains deeply connected to Soul, Gospel, and Black musical traditions.

This was a show built on groove, feeling, and timeless records that continue to move people regardless of generation.
