We opened this New Music Tuesday by paying tribute to jazz and showing love to Miles Davis. Thanks to remastered recordings, we stepped back nearly seventy years and let timeless musicianship set the tone for the ride. From there we moved into alternative Pop through Kelsey Lu, Linda Wolf, hanbee and Jordan Patterson, proving once again that discovery can come from every corner of music.

The soul vibrations soon took the wheel. Chrisette Michele delivered warmth with Flower Mamma, Masego continued his run of smooth and thoughtful records with Breathe, and PJ Morton brought his signature musicianship to the mix. Q and Indigo Boys with Buddy then helped guide the show back toward alternative sounds before KIRBY closed the first hour with her take on OutKast’s B.O.B., a cover that carried its own energy and personality.

The second hour opened with serious Blues and soul from The War and Treaty, reminding listeners that powerful songwriting never goes out of style. From there I doubled up on what I thought was the best album of the week from Aza Lineage, whose reggae roots and message driven records became one of the highlights of the show. Vybz Kartel and Teejay then kept the Caribbean energy alive before hip hop stepped in and carried us home.

The final stretch was packed with bars and strong production. Tierra Whack, T.I. and Domani, The Alchemist, Tha God Fahim, Boldy James, Gordo Flea, AJ Tracey, K-Trap and Headie One all contributed to a second hour that was rooted in lyricism and creativity. DJ Shadow’s collaboration with Run The Jewels, Denzel Curry and TiaCorine added another burst of energy before Fredo and Burna Boy brought the ride to its close.
