Freedom Thursday gave us the freedom to travel across genres and generations. We started with timeless funk and soul from Tom Browne, Change, Patrice Rushen, One Way and Rick James, building the perfect groove before shifting into hip hop with T.I., Nappy Roots, Kanye West, Slick Rick, Samara Cyn, Apani B-Fly Emcee, Domani and Big Pun alongside The Beatnuts. It was a first hour built on classics, storytelling and undeniable rhythm.

The second hour opened with Pharrell Williams leading Voices of Fire on a unique fusion of gospel and hip hop before turning our attention to the Czech music scene. Tonya Graves, whose powerful voice has been part of Czech music for more than three decades and whose career is closely tied to Monkey Business, helped lead us into a celebration of local artists. Sara Rikas and Calin represented today’s generation before we stepped back to revisit legendary voices including Hana Ulrychová, Marie Rottrová, Marta Kubišová and Karel Černoch, showcasing the depth of Czech pop, funk and soul.

To close the ride, we returned to modern sounds with SZA, YellowStraps, DOMi & JD BECK alongside Anderson .Paak, Wretch 32 and Little Simz before ending on the alternative classic “Spiderwebs” from No Doubt. That’s what Freedom Thursday is all about—great music without limits, where every genre has a place and every song helps tell the story.
