Sometimes one record is all you need to establish the foundation.

This edition of Africa Incorporated opened with Bernard Wright’s “Haboglabotribin’,” bringing that unmistakable old-school Funk and Soul before we moved directly into a newer generation of R&B.

Jessica Jolia & Yaahn Hunter Jr., Dylan Sinclair, Janelle Monáe, Sophie Marks, and Joyce Wrice started that transition, showing the different directions today’s R&B can travel while keeping Soul at its core.

Leon Thomas, Kiana Ledé, Tone Stith, H.E.R., and Jorja Smith kept the middle of the show loaded with strong vocals, smooth production, and plenty of feeling. Brayla, Elmiene, and Majid Jordan continued the ride before Silk Sonic’s “Blast Off” brought us home with a record that sounds modern while carrying plenty of old-school Soul in its DNA.

That’s really what connected the entire show.

The production changes. The artists change. The generations change. But when the Soul is there, you can hear where the music came from.

Old school foundation. New school R&B. The flavor was there!
