Freedom Thursday started from a soulful place before we turned the guitars all the way up. We opened by paying respect to Dolly Parton with “I Will Always Love You,” then honored legendary Motown songwriter Janie Bradford through Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want),” which she co-wrote. That gave us the doorway into a full Motown set with The Contours, Jackson 5 and The Spinners before Tom Scott helped us transition into another world.

Then Rock took over The Ride. Jefferson Airplane and Cream got things moving before Jimi Hendrix came through with “All Along the Watchtower.” From there we jumped across eras with a-ha, Duran Duran, Erasure, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and Led Zeppelin. The deeper we traveled, the harder the sound became.

Nirvana pushed us into Grunge with “In Bloom,” followed by Hole, Bikini Kill and Tracy Bonham as Alternative and Punk started taking control. Then Beastie Boys hit with “Sabotage,” Rage Against the Machine brought the aggression of “Killing in the Name,” and Living Colour delivered “Cult of Personality.” Goldfinger and Rancid finished the journey with Punk energy.

What started with Country and Motown eventually traveled through Classic Rock, New Wave, Alternative, Grunge, Punk and Hard Rock. That’s Freedom Thursday, the musical walls come down and The Ride can take us anywhere!
