This Freedom Thursday was all Chicago from top to bottom. We started with the soul of Chaka Khan, then moved through a strong R&B run with Carl Thomas, 3pc., Donell Jones and Tink before the streets started talking.

From there, Chicago Hip Hop took over. Do or Die, Kanye West, Twista, King Von, G Herbo, King Louie, Young Chop and more showed how the city’s sound has evolved across different generations. We touched classic Chicago rap, street records and Drill, but that was only one piece of the story.

Then we moved into another side of the city with Joey Purp, Mick Jenkins, Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Kidz In the Hall, The Cool Kids, Kids These Days, Sidewalk Chalk, Common, Lupe Fiasco and Jamila Woods. Different eras, different neighborhoods, different approaches—but all unmistakably Chicago.

And you already know we couldn’t talk about Chicago without ending in the House. Terry Hunter and Ron Trent brought the show home, reminding everybody that Chicago didn’t just contribute to House music, we helped give birth to it.

That’s what this show was about: the full flavor of the city. Soul, R&B, Hip Hop, Drill and House, all Chicago, all culture, all connected.
