This edition of Africa Incorporated stayed smooth and solid throughout the show, with Jazz and Soul singers leading the journey.

I’ve been digging through the dust lately, going back into older records and hearing the music that helped create so many sounds that came later. This time we started deep in the Jazz with Ramsey Lewis, Bobbi Humphrey, Jack Wilson and Eddie Harris. Different styles, different grooves, but all carrying that musicianship and feeling that makes you want to keep digging.

And when you’re digging through records like these, sometimes something jumps out immediately. Ramsey Lewis and Gwen McCrae gave us two of those moments. If you know your Hip Hop samples, there are sounds in those records that should hit your ears differently. But this wasn’t a samples show. The connections were simply part of the journey.

From the Jazz we moved deeper into Soul with The Sylvers, Gwen McCrae and Melba Moore before letting the eras shift. Klymaxx, The Jets, DeBarge, Stephanie Mills and New Edition brought another side of Soul and R&B into the show without breaking the mood we had already created.

That’s what I wanted from this hour. I wasn’t chasing one decade or trying to make every record connect through a sample. I wanted Jazz, Soul, singers and grooves, letting the music move naturally from one period into another.

Sometimes digging through the past reminds you just how much music is connected. You hear the Jazz. You hear the Soul. You recognize a sample. Then you keep digging.
