This New Music Tuesday was FUN from top to bottom, and instead of easing into the show, I let the electric vibe lead us right out of the gate! Xduppy & Angekebabuye mc started us in Amapiano before GENA’s KAYTRANADA remix, Riva Starr, Glen Lewis and Louie Vega carried that energy through Dance and House. Amapiano to House… FIRE!
Then I switched the vibration and went straight into Dancehall. It had been a while since we heard Shaggy in the Ride, and “Lottery 4.0” with Jeremih, Rick Ross and Skillibeng was a good way to bring him back. Capleton made noise, Shenseea came through with “Vulnerability,” and Bounty Killer finished that run with “Badda Dan Dem.”
From there we took the R&B and Soul route, and I’m telling you, all four of those Soul records were FIRE. KinKai & ENNY, Ellie Harris, Eric Jaye with Ras Kass, then Kiefer with Amber Navran, Phil Beaudreau & Shibo. Kiefer’s Memory Bomb was 1000% my album of the week. “Won’t Be Long” gave me exactly what I wanted from that part of the show before NNORDY added some Contemporary Jazz to the mix.
Then Kirk Franklin opened hour two with one of the records people are definitely going to talk about. Kirk Franklin and GloRilla on a Gospel jam! “This Time” might not be the combination everybody expected, but that’s exactly why it belonged on New Music Tuesday.
From there, we stayed Hip Hop for most of the second hour and there were SOLID BARS everywhere. Strange Fruit Project with Rapsody, Jay Nice, Tha God Fahim & August Fanon, Talib Kweli & Large Professor with Bun B, Daniel Son, Che Noir, Raz Fresco & Boldy James, Blu, Napoleon Da Legend and more.
Apollo Brown & Skyzoo also dropped ANOTHER solid project with Luxury Tax. These two have already established what they can do together, and once again they gave me something worth pulling from for the Ride.
After all those bars, I wanted to bring the Soul back.
And when Stevie Wonder drops new music, I’m listening. He released a four-song EP connected to the 50th anniversary celebration of Songs in the Key of Life, so there was NO WAY I wasn’t getting some Stevie into the show. “My Life Story Of Love” brought us back into that Soul space before Faye Meana gave us “All This Time.”
Then Joy Crookes hit us with the double tap! “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now (Part 2)” with Ravyn Lenae followed by “Painkiller” featuring Denzel Curry gave me the perfect way to finish the Ride.
That’s the thing about New Music Tuesday. I’m not trying to make everything fit neatly into one box. Amapiano can lead into House, Dancehall can give way to Soul, Gospel can open the door to Hip Hop, and Stevie Wonder can sit right beside the newest generation. If it sounds good and deserves some light, there’s room for it in the Ride.
New Music Tuesday always gives you an interesting blend of HITS!
