Freedom Thursday started with a Tyler, The Creator itch, so we doubled up right out of the gate with Pothole and Glitter. Those two records immediately set the tone for a show that would stay rooted in hip hop while still allowing room for soul, R&B and storytelling along the way. From there the ride moved through Samara Cyn, Wale and Little Brother, keeping the energy focused on records built around substance, production and strong songwriting.
The first hour continued with Masta Ace and Smif N Wessun, Lords of the Underground, Tash and Dilated Peoples, bringing together artists who helped shape different eras of hip hop. Lost Boyz added a dose of nostalgia with Renee before the show gradually shifted into R&B territory through City High, Blaque, Ciara and Tweet. Those records provided a smooth change of pace without losing the overall groove that had been established earlier.
The second hour came out swinging as O.C. opened the door and brought the show right back into a hip hop mindset. Blackalicious, Black Eyed Peas, Gifted Gab and Blimes Brixton kept the momentum moving before Add-2 connected generations with Phonte, Brittney Carter and Oliv Blu. O.G.C., Ghostface Killah and Boot Camp Clik continued the run of classics, making this one of those Freedom Thursday sessions where the culture remained front and center from beginning to end.
Toward the close, Mos Def appeared multiple times, first through The Panties and later alongside Macy Gray, Gang Starr and Bilal. Common and Q Tip also stepped into the mix, helping bridge hip hop and soul in a way that felt natural and unforced. The final stretch with Bilal and Hiatus Kaiyote brought warmth, musicianship and groove to the closeout, ending the show on a soulful note after two hours packed with bars, classics and timeless records.
Another great Freedom Thursday in the books, moving comfortably between hip hop history, underground favorites and R&B flavors while keeping the focus on the music.
