This edition of Africa Incorporated was built around Dancehall, Jamaican culture, and the incredible energy surrounding the music.

We started with Wayne Smith’s “Under Mi Sleng Teng,” one of those records that represents a real turning point. Its digital riddim helped change Jamaican music in the mid-1980s and opened another chapter in Dancehall production, giving us the perfect place to begin before moving through different generations of the culture.

From there, Sister Nancy brought “Bam Bam,” followed by Vicious, Capleton, Lexxus, Beenie Man, and Buju Banton. The voices changed, the riddims changed, and the eras changed, but the personality remained unmistakably Jamaican. Dancehall has always been about more than simply singing over a beat; the artist’s voice, cadence, slang, selector, dancers, and crowd all become part of the record.

The show also gave me a chance to talk about my own relationship with Dancehall and those nights in Chicago. The bass, the packed rooms, the dancing, the food, and the energy created an experience that felt completely different from the average club night. Dancehall was something you participated in, not something you just stood around and listened to.

Macka Diamond, Spragga Benz, Bounty Killer, Mad Cobra, Assassin, Cutty Ranks, Cham, and Super Cat pushed the ride deeper into that harder Dancehall sound. Super Cat’s “Dolly My Baby” remix also gave us a natural connection to Hip Hop, bringing The Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige into a record that shows how closely Jamaican sound-system culture and Hip Hop have communicated over the years.

The final stretch moved through Stylo G, Ding Dong, Terror Fabulous, and Koffee, showing how Dancehall continues to reinvent itself while staying connected to its roots.

This wasn’t just a collection of Jamaican records.

It was a celebration of the sound systems, riddims, personalities, dancing, history, and culture that made Dancehall one of Jamaica’s greatest gifts to the world.

Turn it up and feel the Dancehall!
