This edition of Africa Incorporated turned into an all Hip Hop affair, but we started things off smooth with some new music. Erykah Badu and The Alchemist featuring Thundercat opened the show with “They Ain’t You,” before Hieroglyphics and Kota The Friend with Statik Selektah kept that laid back feeling moving.

We also gave some light to the new Busta Rhymes and J Dilla project with “Lay Down,” featuring T3 of Slum Village. Anytime Dilla’s production enters the picture, there is a certain feel that comes with it, and this gave us the perfect bridge from the smoother opening into the heavier Hip Hop portion of the show.

From there we headed toward the East Coast. Fabolous and Ne Yo gave us “Make Me Better,” Jadakiss and Pharrell came with “Knock Yourself Out,” and then Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares” pushed the energy in another direction. The Diplomats followed with “Crunk Muzik,” bringing Cam’ron, Jim Jones and Juelz Santana into the mix.

Then we dipped into that classic 2000s Roc A Fella era, a period when that crew was leading the charge and seemingly always had another record ready to go. Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel and Freeway represented that run before JAY Z’s “Can’t Knock The Hustle” Fool’s Paradise Remix and Kanye West’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” brought us home.

That’s the fun of putting together a Hip Hop show like this. We can start with what’s happening right now, follow the music wherever it takes us and suddenly find ourselves deep inside an era filled with records that still hit.

New music started the conversation, but the classics took over. A lot of bars, a lot of memories and a whole lot of BANGERS from the past!
