Freedom Thursday was another musical journey, and this one had a little something extra! Two hours of Hip Hop, classic records, underground discoveries, and a conversation connecting Chicago to Prague with Hudah of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.
I kicked things off with Talking Heads and their classic Once in a Lifetime, before heading straight into Hip Hop with Marko Stat$, Caleb Colossus, Kai Banks, T.F & Local Astronauts, ASHA OMEGA, and Chicago’s own Mick Jenkins. King Kashmere & Alecs Delarge, Kenny Mason, and Joel Q kept the underground energy moving before Black Milk brought Phonte and Raphael Saadiq together on No Wish.
From there, we got into some serious Hip Hop history! Smif-N-Wessun, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Scarface, Young Jeezy, and David Banner with 9th Wonder all made their way into the mix. I even worked in Jeremih and a little Joe Tex, because Freedom Thursday isn’t about staying in one lane. It’s about hearing the connections between the music, the artists, and the generations that shaped the culture.
Chicago to Prague – Catching Up with Hudah!
One of the highlights of the show was having the opportunity to connect with Hudah from Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Coming from the same city, there was plenty for us to talk about beyond the music.
We got into the group’s family history, growing up surrounded by music, and the influence of their father, legendary Chicago musician Phil Cohran. Hudah shared stories about the brothers’ musical upbringing, the importance of independence, and what it means to carry their sound around the world.
We also talked about their international performances, including their recent time in Ireland, and the possibility of bringing Hypnotic Brass Ensemble to Prague. That’s something I’d love to see happen!
I introduced the conversation with Skyzoo’s Bed-Stuy Is Burning, featuring Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, and continued exploring their sound with Space, featuring Yasiin Bey, and Time. Three records showing how naturally their brass arrangements connect with Hip Hop while maintaining their own musical identity.
And the music didn’t stop there! Guru’s When You’re Near from Jazzmatazz Volume 1 kept that Jazz and Hip Hop connection alive, while Dstrk’s THERAPY brought another voice into the journey.
What I love about Freedom Thursday is having the freedom to move between generations, styles, and stories. From Talking Heads to underground Hip Hop, from classic New York records to Chicago’s brass tradition, the music continues to connect us.
Big thanks to Hudah for taking the time to join me and share some of that history with our audience here in the Czech Republic and around the world!
Another Freedom Thursday in the books. Music, culture, and connections—Chicago to Prague and beyond!
