Instead of spending my evening watching the solar eclipse, I decided to let Swae Lee provide the entertainment for the night.

SaSaZu was packed with a noticeably young crowd that came ready to move. From early in the show, you could feel that Swae Lee’s audience wasn’t there just to stand around and record everything on their phones. They wanted to participate.

And participate they did.

The crowd was rocking, lyrics were coming back toward the stage almost word for word, and over the course of the night a few mosh pits started opening up around the venue. Swae Lee kept feeding them energy, and his fan base kept giving it right back.

No Flex Zone

One of the first moments that really showed what kind of crowd we were dealing with was No Flex Zone.

The energy immediately jumped. Shooting from the side of the stage gave me a great perspective because I could capture Swae Lee performing while also seeing the reaction stretching across the venue.

What I enjoyed most about the position was being able to see the relationship between the performer and the audience. You aren’t only watching what is happening onstage, you are watching the response to it at the exact same time.

Slowing Things Down With Sativa

Not everything needed to be full throttle.

Sativa brought the tempo down and showed another side of the show. The room moved from jumping and shouting to something smoother and more melodic.

That contrast was important because Swae Lee wasn’t simply running through one high energy record after another. He understood when to pull the crowd back before turning things up again.

I Didn’t Know About the Spider-Man Connection

One of the things I didn’t fully understand before this show was just how strong the relationship between Swae Lee, Sunflower and Spider-Man fans had become.

When it was time for Sunflower, Swae called out the Spider-Man fans in the building, and suddenly I understood.

They were everywhere.

This wasn’t simply another popular song in the set. For a huge part of this younger audience, the song carries its own memories and connection to the Spider-Verse movies.

Then Swae Lee took the moment one step further by handing actual sunflowers out to women in the crowd.

It changed the atmosphere completely. Thousands of people were singing together while flowers were being passed from the stage into the audience.

It was easily one of the most memorable moments of the evening.

Then No Type Hit

And then it was back to business.

When No Type came on, the crowd went hard.

This was the kind of record where you could physically see the venue shift. People were jumping, yelling the lyrics and pushing the energy right back toward the stage.

From the side stage perspective, this one probably demonstrates the energy of the night better than anything. Swae Lee is working the stage while a packed SaSaZu moves behind and in front of him.

A Young Fan Base That Came Ready

I’m not going to pretend I walked into SaSaZu knowing everything about Swae Lee’s relationship with his audience.

That was part of what made the night interesting.

The crowd was younger than many of the shows I normally cover, and they had their own relationship with these records. Songs that I know from radio, hip hop or popular culture mean something different when you watch thousands of younger fans react to them together.

The mosh pits, the Spider-Man connection, the sing-alongs and the sheer amount of energy all told the story.

And Swae Lee knew exactly who he was performing for.

The young man brought a ton of energy, stayed connected with his audience, and gave his fan base exactly what they came to SaSaZu to experience.

Sometimes the best part of covering live music is walking into a room knowing the artist, but walking out understanding the audience a little better.

This was one of those nights.
