Some shows are built around one sound. Others are about seeing how far the music can travel while still keeping everything connected.

This edition of Africa Incorporated was definitely the latter.

We opened with Bernard Wright’s “Who Do You Love,” giving the show a Soulful foundation before moving directly into Hip Hop. Rae Sremmurd brought a familiar record into the mix before Sonnyjim and N.O.R.E. gave us some bars and a little grit.

The mood then changed without losing the groove. Troy Ave helped make the transition before Res and Kelis brought their own distinctive approaches to R&B. Then Prince & The Revolution’s “I Would Die 4 U” gave us one of those records that doesn’t need much explanation—the music speaks for itself. Joyce Wrice kept that section moving while Freddie Gibbs brought some Hip Hop back into the equation.

From there, we headed toward Africa. Juls with Worlasi and Cina Soul brought the Palmwine flavor, SPINALL and Wizkid followed, and Wande Coal kept the Afrobeats portion of the journey moving.

But Hip Hop wasn’t finished.

Tierra Whack brought her unmistakable personality with “WIGGIDY WHACK,” followed by Brittney Carter and Gifted Gab & Blimes Brixton. Different voices and different approaches to the microphone, but the bars remained the connection.

Chenayder, Vayda & Norah’s World started bringing the energy back down before Slime Dot’s “Who?” closed the show with Soul, completing the circle we started with Bernard Wright.

Soul to Hip Hop. Hip Hop to R&B. R&B to Afrobeats. Back to the bars and finally back to Soul.

A little bit of everything, but the flavor stayed connected.
