This episode of Africa Incorporated was recorded live from the Žižkov Slowdown Radio studio, the home base of DJ Pufaz. Being on the road gave the session a different energy, and the show naturally extended into a deeper musical ride.
The first half leaned into smooth jazz and soulful fusion. The Crusaders opened with warmth and groove, followed by Stanley Clarke and George Benson bringing musicianship and clarity. Reel People, The Brand New Heavies, and Incognito blended jazz structure with R&B textures, creating a laid-back but intentional atmosphere. Gene Harris added that Latin funk touch, and the pocket felt effortless.
Then the shift happened.
Gang Starr’s “Jazz Thing” was the bridge — the moment where jazz and hip hop met directly. From there, the drums hit harder. Masego kept the vibe fluid, while Amber Navran, D’Angelo, and Erykah Badu held the soul intact even as the rhythm sharpened.
As the final stretch approached, the focus turned toward Chicago. Redman sparked the intensity before Wale and Hi-Tek set the stage for deeper lyricism. Hieroglyphics brought classic underground energy, and the closing run leaned heavy into Chicago voices — Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Joey Purp, and Noname. Sharp bars. Cultural pride. Purpose.
Jazz to hip hop. Smooth to focused. Extended and intentional.
