Freedom Thursday moved in every direction and reminded listeners exactly why this show has no boundaries. We opened with heavy soul vibrations through Sergio Mendes, Jill Scott, Kindred the Family Soul, Jaguar Wright and Chloe x Halle. Those records created an atmosphere rooted in feeling and musicianship before house and Afro rhythms entered the picture through Mecca:83, SPINALL and Nasty C.

Hip hop stepped into the arena next with Joey Purp, DJ Premier, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Big Sean carrying the energy forward. The first hour also included a special moment for my friend Johnny Youngblood, a Virginia rapper who made the Czech Republic home. Since his passing, it’s always meaningful to revisit his music and share his voice with listeners. We closed the opening hour with the timeless energy of Johnny Kemp and his classic Just Got Paid.

The second hour POP’ed out. Maggie Rogers kicked things off with Alaska and from there the female Pop stars took over the speakers. Lorde, Lykke Li, Ariana Grande, Christina Aguilera, Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift all brought records that showed just how powerful great Pop songwriting can be. The show then circled back into soulful territory through Amerie and Mary J. Blige before slowing everything down with the Moses Yoofee Trio and Terrace Martin’s beautiful sax interpretation of Whoa.

This Freedom Thursday traveled through soul, house, Afro rhythms, hip hop and Pop while staying connected by great songs and good energy. Diesal is here to provide you culture in music.
