Grandmaster Flash is coming to Vienna, and this one is bigger than just watching a legendary DJ work the turntables.

The Four Elements II Tour brings DJing, MCing, Breakdance and Graffiti together under one roof, giving people a chance to experience Hip Hop as a full culture instead of just a genre of music.

That is what makes this show special to me.

Hip Hop has grown into one of the biggest cultural forces on Earth, but before streaming numbers, arenas and playlists, it was built through these elements working together. The DJ controlled the energy, the MC moved the crowd, the dancers gave the music motion and graffiti gave the culture a visual identity.

Grandmaster Flash sits right in the middle of that history.

His experimentation with techniques such as Quick Mix Theory, backspinning and punch phrasing helped change the DJ from someone simply playing records into someone using turntables as instruments. Then with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, songs like “The Message” helped push Hip Hop into deeper social commentary and showed just how far the music could go.

That is why this does not feel like an “old school” nostalgia show.

It feels like a live history lesson without the classroom.

You get to see the pieces together.

You get to hear the music, watch the movement, see the art and understand how all of it connects.

For somebody who already loves Hip Hop, this is a chance to reconnect with the foundation. For somebody who only knows the culture through current rap music, this is a chance to see where the language, movement and energy came from.

The night also includes MA21 as local support, giving the Vienna scene its own place in the event. The show is presented by 50 Years of Hip Hop & Steelo, with Radio Superfly attached as media support.

Hip Hop has traveled a long way from the Bronx, but the core ideas still connect people everywhere. DJs, MCs, breakers and graffiti artists now exist in scenes all across Europe, and Vienna gets a chance to experience those elements together with one of the people who helped shape the culture from the beginning.
