Freedom Thursday was another trip where you never knew exactly where The Ride was going next. We opened with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs performing “Maps” live at the Royal Albert Hall before settling into some Soul with Olivia Dean, Ego Ella May, Alessia Cara and Amel Larrieux. Then the tempo started moving as Chingy, Da Brat, 112 and Next brought that Hip Hop and R&B combination before we jumped into a stretch of music that helped define an era. Janet Jackson, The Time and Prince brought that Minneapolis energy before Michael Jackson closed out the first hour.

The second hour came through the door with Father MC before we settled into smooth Hip Hop classics from 2Pac, Digital Underground, LL COOL J, Heavy D & The Boyz, Da Youngsta’s and Das EFX. From there I wanted to explore some sounds connected to one of my favorite Hip Hop crews, Def Squad, so Redman and Erick Sermon got their shine. Then we took it back into the New Jack Swing era with Wreckx-n-Effect, Kwamé, Kris Kross, Three Times Dope and finally Guy with “Groove Me.” Alternative, Soul, R&B, Minneapolis Funk, Pop, classic Hip Hop and New Jack Swing all found a home on this Freedom Thursday. That is what Freedom Thursday is about. Different sounds, different eras and no musical boundaries. Dope from Diesal!
