Freedom Thursday! This week, I wanted to take the music across cultures, connecting sounds from different parts of the world and letting the records tell the story. A lot of culture packed into just two hours!

We opened with George Davis and “Budoshida,” bringing that House energy into the afternoon before taking a trip to Brazil. Frank Sinatra, affectionately known as Old Blue Eyes, joined Antônio Carlos Jobim for “The Girl from Ipanema,” and from there we explored the Samba and Bossa Nova flavors of Astrud Gilberto and Clara Nunes. Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 brought that stretch to a close with the classic “Mais Que Nada.”

Then it was time to take The Ride across the Atlantic!

We headed into West African sounds with Ebo Taylor’s “Love & Death” before Tony Allen & Africa 70 brought the extended groove of “Jealousy.” Ofo & The Black Company followed with “Allah Wakbarr,” and of course, Femi Kuti had to show up! His “Dem Bobo” completed a stretch of Afrobeat that connected the music to another part of the world.

After all that rhythmic energy, we settled back into Soul and R&B to close out the first hour. Aquarian Dream, Marsha Ambrosius and Alex Isley gave us a smooth landing before we prepared to switch things up again.

Hour two opened with something to think about.

With Macklemore’s name prominent in the news, I felt “White Privilege II,” featuring Jamila Woods, was a fitting record to revisit. Music has always provided a space for artists to address difficult subjects, and this was one of those moments where the message became part of the musical journey.

From there, the Hip Hop store was open!

We moved through Loyalty Is Timeless, Blu, MoRuf featuring Mez & Mick Jenkins, Common and Arrested Development. OSHUN, Mac Miller and A Tribe Called Quest continued the stretch, bringing different perspectives, production styles and lyrical approaches into the second hour.

Then it was time to bring the music back toward Soul and R&B. Anthony Hamilton’s “White Hennessy” opened that final stretch before Moonchild, Erykah Badu, Beyoncé & JAY-Z and Jai’Len Josey brought us home.

What I enjoyed about this Freedom Thursday was how naturally the music connected. We traveled through Brazilian rhythms, West African Afrobeat, Jazz, House, Soul and Hip Hop without having to stay in one place. Different cultures, different generations and different musical approaches, all sharing the same two-hour journey.

That’s Freedom Thursday! Music has no borders, and The Ride keeps moving!
