FLOWERS FOR THE ELECTRONIC MUSIC PIONEERS! 🎶⚡

Another DOPE Africa Incorporated in the books, Y’ALL!

Monday, November 2nd, we went ELECTRIC! The inspiration came from the news surrounding Detroit’s legendary Juan Atkins, one of the founding fathers of Techno and a major influence on electronic music worldwide.

Now y’all know I’m not about to suddenly start playing TECHNO! But RESPECT IS RESPECT! When we talk about the history of electronic music, we have to recognize the creators who helped build the foundation. Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson helped shape Detroit Techno, opening doors for generations of DJs and producers.

GIVE THE CREATORS THEIR FLOWERS! 🌹

We opened the afternoon with Wendy Rene’s “After Laughter (Comes Tears),” bringing some classic Soul into the mix before shifting gears toward South Africa. TitoM & DT.MO introduced that Amapiano flavor with “Thola,” followed by Black Motion, Spice Drums and Imacsoul with “Ngonyama,” featuring Tshwane Gospel Choir and Mr. Mercedes.

Those African rhythms and percussion brought some serious energy! Ama Louise & GA continued the journey with “Hindsight,” taking us deeper into Afro House before the music started moving toward Chicago and the sounds of HOUSE!

Rochelle Jordan’s “Doing It Too,” remixed by Chicago’s own Terry Hunter, brought that soulful dancefloor feeling. Then Byron the Aquarius delivered two selections, “Is She Here” and “Everlasting,” keeping those warm grooves flowing.

I love how House music can move through so many different moods. Soulful vocals, deep basslines, Jazz influences and percussion all coming together to create something that makes you MOVE!

Wipe the Needle followed with “Kissing You,” featuring Lifford, before Mike Dunn’s “It’s a Groove Thang” (Saison Remix) brought another Chicago connection into the afternoon.

And if you know Chicago House, you KNOW Mike Dunn!

From there, Dennis Ferrer’s “Hey Hey” (DF’s Attention Vocal Mix) kept the energy moving before Artwork Sounds brought that beautiful Gospel House feeling with “God Has Been Good,” featuring House Victimz.

SOUL, SPIRIT AND HOUSE MUSIC!

Then we headed back to DETROIT with MOODYMANN!

“Tribute” brought us into the world of one of Detroit’s most distinctive electronic music artists. Moodymann has always represented that connection between House, Soul, Funk and the city’s musical heritage. Considering the inspiration behind this episode, that Detroit connection felt especially important.

But we weren’t finished!

We closed with Chicago’s own RP Boo and “Havoc Devastation,” bringing that raw, experimental FOOTWORK energy into the final stretch.

Now we’re talking about another important chapter in electronic music culture! Chicago Footwork took elements of House and pushed the rhythms into something completely different, creating another sound that would influence dancers and producers around the world.

And that’s what this afternoon was really about.

THE CREATORS! THE INNOVATORS! THE PIONEERS!

I might not be the guy playing Techno every week, but I recognize its importance and the influence Detroit’s pioneers have had on electronic music worldwide.

From the soulful foundations of Wendy Rene to South African Amapiano and Afro House, through Chicago House, Detroit grooves and Chicago Footwork, this show celebrated the creativity that continues to connect generations and cultures.

Music doesn’t stand still. It evolves, crosses borders and inspires something new. But we should never forget the people who helped make those possibilities happen.

FLOWERS TO THE CREATORS! RESPECT TO THE PIONEERS!
