SOULFUL R&B VIBES WITH A HIP HOP TOUCH! 🎶🔥
Another DOPE Africa Incorporated in the books, Y’ALL!
This Thursday, November 5th, we kept things SOULFUL and LIVELY! With autumn in full swing and those beautiful colors surrounding us, I wanted to bring some warmth into the afternoon with a selection of R&B favorites, revisit some veterans of the game, and eventually take the music into a soulful Hip Hop vibration!
We opened with D’Angelo’s “Cruisin’” from Brown Sugar. MAN, what a beautiful record! That warm production, those vocals and that unmistakable D’Angelo feeling were the perfect way to start the afternoon. From there, Kevin Ross kept things smooth with “Don’t Go,” followed by Rae Khalil’s “IS IT WORTH IT”, bringing a little Alternative R&B flavor into the mix.
Alex Isley continued that soulful atmosphere with “Alone,” before Stokley stepped in with “SHE.” Five artists with their own personalities and approaches to R&B, but all delivering that feeling I wanted to share with y’all!
Then we took a step back and brought in some VETERANS OF THE GAME!
SADE!
“Hang On to Your Love” from Diamond Life brought that timeless combination of Soul, Jazz and beautiful musicianship. Some records simply never get old, and Sade has a catalog full of them!
Next came Erykah Badu with “Other Side of the Game” from Baduizm. That record is a whole atmosphere by itself! Erykah’s storytelling, the groove and the musicianship helped define an era of Neo Soul that continues to influence artists today.
Alicia Keys followed with “I Need You” from As I Am, keeping those powerful vocals and soulful arrangements moving through the afternoon. Then Lauryn Hill stepped in with “Everything Is Everything.”
MAN! LAURYN HILL!
That combination of Soul, Hip Hop and meaningful lyrics is exactly why her music remains so important. These artists weren’t just making records; they were helping shape the sound of R&B and Soul for generations to come.
And after all that beautiful Soul, it was time to sprinkle a little HIP HOP on top!
We brought in SWV featuring Wu-Tang Clan with the remix of “Anything.” Now THAT’S a combination! Those classic R&B harmonies meeting the raw energy of Wu-Tang brought us right into that space where Soul and Hip Hop connect so naturally.
Then came The Roots featuring Jill Scott with the live version of “You Got Me” from The Roots Come Alive.
LIVE INSTRUMENTATION, SOULFUL VOCALS AND HIP HOP!
That’s a musical combination I can appreciate any day of the week! The Roots have always represented that connection between musicianship and MC culture, and Jill Scott’s voice brings another level of Soul into the performance.
We closed things out with Rapsody featuring J. Cole on “Sojourner,” bringing thoughtful lyricism and soulful Hip Hop production into the final stretch.
Rapsody is one of those MCs who reminds us that Hip Hop storytelling and lyrical skills remain essential to the culture. And with J. Cole alongside her, it was a fitting way to close this particular musical journey.
From the smooth R&B of D’Angelo, Kevin Ross and Alex Isley to the timeless sounds of Sade, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill, then into SWV, Wu-Tang Clan, The Roots and Rapsody, we traveled through different generations while keeping that SOULFUL connection alive!
That’s what I enjoy about putting these shows together. The music can move between different eras and styles without losing the feeling that connects everything.
R&B, SOUL, LIVE MUSIC AND HIP HOP CULTURE!
Another afternoon filled with beautiful vocals, warm grooves, incredible musicianship and some serious lyrical flavor!
SOULFUL R&B WITH A LITTLE HIP HOP SPRINKLED ON TOP!
