This edition of Africa Incorporated was dripping with CULTURE and GOOD VIBRATIONS!

We opened with Arrested Development’s “Mr. Wendal,” showing some love to the group ahead of their performance in Prague that very night. It was a fitting way to begin a show built around music that carries a message, connects people and brings different sounds together.

From there, we moved into Jazz with Brandee Younger’s “Livin’ And Lovin’ In My Own Way,” featuring Pete Rock. The combination of Jazz instrumentation and Hip Hop influence gave us a beautiful transition into Debórah Bond and Reel People’s “You Are the One.”

Then it was time to get into the groove!

George Davis brought “Marimba Disco,” followed by Rochelle Jordan and Terry Hunter’s remix of “Doing It Too.”This was the House portion of the journey, where the rhythm took control and we gave the music room to breathe.

The show then shifted into contemporary R&B and Soul with SAULT’s “Don’t Waste My Time,” H.E.R.’s “Exhausted”and Robert Glasper featuring Erykah Badu on “Afro Blue.”

That Glasper and Badu collaboration captures something I love about this musical space. Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop and R&B don’t have to exist in separate boxes. They can share the same room, influence one another and create something completely natural.

Rae Khalil, Elle Varner and NNAOMI kept the contemporary Soul flowing before we reached back into the classics.

Ohio Players gave us “Ecstasy,” The Delfonics followed with “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time),” and Deniece Williams brought the show home with “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.”

We started with Hip Hop, moved through Jazz and House, settled into R&B and finished with GOOD Soul!

For me, this is what Africa Incorporated is all about. Different styles and generations of music coming together without losing the culture that connects them.

Good music doesn’t need to stay in one lane. When the feeling is right, you just follow the vibrations!
