This edition of Africa Incorporated slowed everything down and settled into the rich sounds of classic Soul and Blues. These weren’t records made for rushing through life—they were made for pouring a drink, finding a comfortable seat, and letting the music tell its story. From beginning to end, the ride stayed rooted in timeless songwriting, unforgettable vocals, and grooves that have never lost their power.
The Kay-Gees opened the session with nearly eight minutes of pure Soul before Renaldo Domino and Joe Simon carried the momentum with records that showcased the warmth and musicianship of the era. Tyrone Davis followed with his unmistakable Chicago Soul sound, reminding listeners why he remains one of the city’s greatest voices.
The middle of the ride leaned deeper into Southern Soul and Blues. Z.Z. Hill, Johnnie Taylor, Denise LaSalle, and Shirley Brown each brought songs filled with love, heartbreak, honesty, and real-life storytelling. These artists never needed gimmicks—their voices and the emotion behind every lyric did all the work.
The final stretch shifted toward sophisticated R&B with Miki Howard, Stephanie Mills, Meli’sa Morgan, Johnny Gill, and Tony Terry. Their records carried the same Soulful spirit while introducing the polished production that helped define R&B through the late 1980s and early 1990s.
This was music for slow evenings, good conversations, and quiet moments.
Old school from top to bottom.
Nothing but bangers through and through.
