This edition of Africa Incorporated stayed ALL SOUTHERN! We started things off smooth with Little Brother’s “Slow It Down,” representing North Carolina before we began moving around the South and letting the different regions speak for themselves.

T.I. brought “Goodlife” with Pharrell and Common before Dem Franchize Boyz gave us that unmistakable Atlanta energy with “Oh I Think They Like Me.” From there, 8Ball & MJG, OutKast, David Banner and Goodie Mob showed just how much variety exists inside what people simply call Southern Hip Hop.

That’s part of what I wanted this show to represent. The South isn’t one sound.

Atlanta doesn’t sound like Memphis. Mississippi brings something different. New Orleans has its own musical DNA. Houston created a completely different approach, and Florida has always brought its own attitude to the conversation. Yet somehow, there’s a Southern connection running through all of it.

The Hot Boys and Big Tymers took us into New Orleans with “I Need a Hot Girl,” before Mike Jones, Slim Thug and Paul Wall brought that Houston flavor with “Still Tippin’.” Then Master P and the No Limit crew came through with “Make ‘Em Say Uhh,” another reminder of just how powerful New Orleans became in Hip Hop during that era.

Rick Ross pulled several regions together on “Luxury Tax” with Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Trick Daddy before Ludacris and Shawnna brought us back through Atlanta with “Stand Up.” Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade” kept that Atlanta run going before LYNN’s “On The Radar” Freestyle gave us something newer to close things out.

What I love about Southern Hip Hop is that every region has its own personality. The accents, slang, production, cars, fashion, food, dancing and way people carry themselves become part of the music. You can travel hundreds of miles and hear the sound change while the Southern culture underneath it still connects everything.

We started with Little Brother and then let the music speak for itself.

Different parts. Different sounds. The same Southern SWAG, and that is something that can’t be compared anywhere in the world!
