Freedom Thursday came out swinging with nothing but hip hop. From the opening DJ Spinna remix of Mos Def and Ronny Jordan through Hi-Tek, Mick Jenkins, Joey Bada$$ and Young Jeezy, the energy never let up. The Midwest received plenty of love as The Cool Kids got the spotlight with a back-to-back play of “Black Mags, Pt. II” and the original “Black Mags,” a reminder of just how influential that duo has been. Ransom, Conway the Machine, Lloyd Banks, JPEGMAFIA, Common, Monie Love and 2Pac rounded out an opening hour built for true hip hop heads.

The second hour took a different direction as Portishead’s “Numb” created the perfect atmosphere before today’s generation of R&B stars stepped into the spotlight. Summer Walker’s “Insane” remains one of my favorite records, while Normani, Kehlani and Coco Jones kept the momentum rolling with one strong performance after another.

CARRTOONS and MIA GLADSTONE provided the perfect bridge into a celebration of timeless soul, leading us to Jamiroquai, Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross. From there we turned back to some of the greatest women in R&B with Janet Jackson, Brandy and Amel Larrieux before closing the ride with the OutKast classic featuring CeeLo Green and Erykah Badu. That’s what Freedom Thursday is all about—great music across generations, delivered with no boundaries.
