This week’s Freedom Thursday wasn’t just about playing House music, it was about telling its story. We opened with Donna Summer’s legendary “I Feel Love,” one of the records that helped shape the future of dance music, before moving into “A History,” a track that reminds us House isn’t just something you dance to, it’s a culture built on decades of musical evolution.
From there, we traveled to Chicago, the birthplace of House, before making our way to New York, where Larry Levan transformed Paradise Garage into one of the most influential clubs in music history. We explored how Garage House crossed the Atlantic, evolved into UK Garage, and inspired entirely new movements while keeping the same soulful spirit at its core.
The first hour closed on one of House music’s greatest strengths—positivity. Barbara Tucker’s “Beautiful People” and Louie Vega’s remix of The Winans Brothers featuring The Clark Sisters reminded us that House has always carried the spirit of gospel, community and celebration. The church didn’t disappear; it found another dance floor.
Hour two brought us back home to Chicago with DJ Pharris, opening the door to the culture of Juke and Footwork, two uniquely Chicago movements that continue to influence dancers and producers around the world. From there we headed to Brazil before crossing the Atlantic to South Africa, where Afro House and Amapiano have become global forces. Sun-El Musician, Kelvin Momo and Black Coffee demonstrated how House continues to evolve while staying connected to its roots.
We wrapped up the journey with Gene Farris, Josh Milan, Mike Dunn and The Bucketheads, bringing the story full circle. From Disco to House, from Chicago to Johannesburg, House music continues to connect cultures, inspire people and remind us that some of the world’s greatest musical movements began with one simple idea: bringing people together through rhythm.
