This New Music Tuesday had plenty of HEAT, but we started things off by digging deep into Soul. Aron featuring Cory Henry opened the Ride with “Movements,” followed by Thee Sinseers & Joey Quiñones, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Jaymin, TheARTI$t, SHERIE, Jazlyn Martin & Jean Deaux and Joyce Wrice. The first two sets gave us a chance to settle into some fresh Soul and R&B before switching directions.
Then Chicago’s 10-year-old Young Roddo stepped into the mix with “Anything” from his He Is Me project. I always enjoy finding new artists, but hearing a young artist from Chicago already making noise definitely caught my attention.
From there, it was time for some REGGAE FIRE! Queen Omega & Greatest Friends started the run with “Spiritual War,” followed by Lee “Scratch” Perry & Steve Marshall, Romain Virgo and Jah Lil. We then switched gears again as Ethan French, Clean Bandit with Chlöe & OMAH LAY, and Arlo Parks carried us into more Pop and electronic sounds to close out hour one.
Papoose opened hour two with “Jezebel,” a personal record telling his side of the story surrounding his relationship with ex-wife Remy Ma. That opened the door to a second hour where the Hip Hop store stayed BUSY!
Jourden was one of my favorite discoveries of the week, with music from A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. Tone Spliff & Vic Monroe also had one of my favorite projects with Native Science, and of course the Chicago connection made that one hit even harder.
There were plenty of other discoveries along the way. Anderson .Paak & Cordae, Blu, ANKHLEJOHN & Chuck Strangers, AZ Chike, Toure with Mozzy, and ALAMO THE LAST NUBIAN with Sadat X all found their way into the Ride.
Another surprise was the DPG and Wu-Tang collaboration. Hearing Kurupt, Masta Killa, Kokane, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon connecting those different Hip Hop families was something I definitely wanted represented on the show.
After nearly an entire hour of Hip Hop, Jourden and Tone Spliff & Vic Monroe returned before Angelo Mota gave us the final record of the day with “is this my life.”
Soul, R&B, Reggae, Pop, electronic sounds and a serious amount of Hip Hop. Familiar names were here, but just as important were the artists and projects you may not have known before pressing play.
